How To File A LAANC

Drone operators must undergo a process in which they identify when they need authorization to fly in controlled airspace. Using a drone app, pilots can see their position relative to Class D airspace. When inside controlled airspace, a blue “Get LAANC” icon indicates that an authorization is required, while outside the controlled area, the app displays a green “Cleared for Takeoff” bar.

Pre-Flight Checklists and Safety

Even when flying in uncontrolled airspace, pilots must maintain situational awareness and use a spotter. The app provides pre-flight checklists covering drone registration, labeling, trust and safety tests, and risk assessments for both pilot and drone. These checklists are akin to the “IMSAFE” and PAVE assessments in manned aviation, helping pilots account for fatigue, stress, and environmental conditions.

Using LAANC for Airspace Authorization

When filing a LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) request, pilots select their operation type (recreational or Part 107 commercial) and desired altitude. The system provides ceiling altitudes for specific areas, automatically adjusting based on proximity to the center of controlled airspace. Pilots can also schedule the date, time, and duration of their flight, with some requests eligible for auto-approval.

Enhancing Situational Awareness

The app also integrates weather information, mission tracking, and altitude guidelines to ensure safe operations. By visualizing permissible flight zones and ceiling altitudes, drone operators can plan flights efficiently and comply with FAA regulations, reducing risk while maximizing operational flexibility.

Community Engagement and Resources

Jason encourages pilots to share their own pre-flight routines and experiences with LAANC filings in the comments, fostering a community of informed and compliant drone operators. Additional resources and links to LAANC guidance are provided to support continued learning.
