Understand Weather Before Every Flight

Situational awareness begins with knowing the weather, all of it. This includes current conditions, forecasts, and potential hazards like thunderstorms. Check wind speed, visibility, and temperature, and understand whether the measurements are in miles per hour or knots. Don’t skip the forecast discussion, it’s written in plain English and offers valuable insights even for non-pilots.

Plan Your Mission and Know the Airspace

Before launch, gather as much information as possible about your mission. Know the site layout, the number of people present, and the desired video or photo specifications. If flying in controlled airspace or beyond Part 107 rules, request a waiver or airspace authorization in advance. Use the LAANC system for quick approvals and consult VFR sectional charts and the chart supplement to fully understand your flight area.

Know Your Drone’s Capabilities and Limitations

Familiarize yourself with your drone’s operating system, controllability, and built-in safety features. Understand its wind tolerance and never exceed it, as high winds can cause loss of control. Know how your drone reacts to signal loss, mechanical warnings, or restricted airspace, and always stay within manufacturer guidelines.

Enhance Safety with Scanning and a Visual Observer

In flight, scan the sky in short, segmented intervals to improve detection of other traffic. Consider having a visual observer (VO) for an extra set of eyes to help spot hazards, monitor air traffic, and maintain overall safety. Listening to air traffic control can also boost your awareness and help you respond quickly to changing conditions.
