Why Day 23 Is So Special
Day 23 of the 31-Day Safer Pilot Challenge is a personal favorite for the MzeroA team – just just because of the valuable lesson, but also because “23” is a meaningful number (think 23 Mike Zulu). On this day, pilots are challenged to master their instrument scan in six-second increments, reinforcing critical flight deck awareness.
It is important to remember that mastery doesn’t happen in 6 seconds, but rather in consistent, bite-sized sessions of six-second learning moments. This day is about building instrument scanning muscle memory and reducing the time it takes to interpret vital flight data, ultimately contributing to a safer flight experience.
The Science Behind Six-Second Scanning
The idea of using six seconds to interpret an instrument scan originates from a 1900s UCLA study. In that research, pilots were shown images of instrument panels for six seconds and then asked to identify flight attitudes – like a climbing left turn or descending right turn. Over time, the exposure duration was shortened as pilots improved, eventually identifying conditions in as little as 2.5 seconds.
This approach has now been adapted by MzeroA Online Ground SChool into perceptual learning modules. These modules “gamify” training by challenging students to recognize instrument panel information quickly and accurately. The quicker a pilot can digest and respond to what the instruments are telling them, the safer their decisions will be.
Practicing the Instrument Scan – A Hands-On Approach
Throughout the video, there are several instrument scan exams that are demonstrated using both steam gauges and G1000 panels. This is to encourage pilots to try interpreting the panels in real time:
- A climbing left-hand turn
- A level right-hand turn
- A descending right-hand turn
- Straight and level flight
- Apparent equipment failures
Each six-second challenge reinforces pattern recognition and faster decision-making. As viewers progress through the examples, the tempo increases, making it more realistic and effective.
Pilots are also invited to join in on the fun by accessing these perceptual learning modules themselves by visiting MzeroA.com, clicking on the resources tab, and selecting the instrument scan modules to test their skills.
