In this video, Jason Schappert is joined by MzeroA’s Martin, to discuss a valuable lesson from one of Martin’s checkride experiences. Both Jason and Martin emphasize that pilots learn best not only through training and practice, but also by listening to the real stories and experiences of others.
Setting the Stage: Martin’s Multi-Engine Checkride
At the time, Martin was already a full-time Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), with 500-600 hours of flight time and a roster of students. Despite this, he still faced the nerves and challenges of his sixth checkride, this time for his multi-engine rating in a Diamond DA42.
The Mistake – Skipping the Checklist
On the day of his checkride, Martin was well-prepared, but later made a common error: he skipped part of his checklist. While on short final, he forgot to extend the landing gear. Something felt off; the aircraft’s behavior didn’t match his expectations. Trusting his instincts, Martin decided to go around.
During the climb-out, he realized his mistake: he hadn’t completed the checklist, and the landing gear was still up. His Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) noticed as well, but instead of failure, the situation became a learning opportunity.
The Go-Around Decision
Jason highlights that Martin’s go-around decision was the right choice. Many pilots fear that making a mistake or executing a go-around during a checkride automatically means failure. In reality, recognizing an issue, making a decision, and correcting the situation demonstrates good judgment.
As he put it: a go-around is not a sign of failure, it is the first option when something doesn’t feel right, and safe landings come second, but only if conditions are stable and secure. Martin’s story proves that safety and decision-making matter more than perfection.
