Learning how to fly a drone with confidence requires more than a steady hand and a few YouTube tutorials. Truly skilled drone pilots build safe and capable skills gradually and with a great deal of practice.
Regardless of whether you have big plans to earn your Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Remote Pilot Certificate or are simply looking to fly recreationally, mastering the five foundational drills outlined below could help sharpen your reactions and make you a more confident pilot.
Understanding Your Controller Before You Fly
Before you start practicing any of these maneuvers, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with your controller and how it works. And while different brands and models of drones may differ in their setup, most drones sold in the United States use what’s known as a “Mode 2” configuration, where each stick controls two flight inputs and every maneuver is a combination of these movements.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the drone stick control basics on a Mode 2 controller (however, you should always refer to your drone’s specific manual and user guide before flying):
- Left Stick
- Throttle – Controls altitude, allowing the drone to move up or down
- Yaw – Rotates the nose of the drone left or right
- Right Stick
- Pitch – Tilts the drone forward or backward
- Roll – Moves the drone left or right
At the end of the day, the most important drone maneuvers rely on some combination of drone throttle yaw control, pitch control, and roll. Thus, taking the time to master your stick control basics and beginner drone flying drills is crucial before moving on to more complex maneuvers.
Drill 1: Left Stick Only (Throttle and Yaw)
So, where should you begin when fine-tuning your drone flying skills? First, it can be helpful to master your left-side controls. In doing so, you’ll keep your focus 100% on the left stick while keeping the right stick completely neutral. The purpose of this drill is to isolate your throttle from your yaw, which can prevent unwanted altitude drift during turns.
To complete this exercise, lift the drone into a stable hover at approximately eye level. Once the aircraft feels steady, practice making small throttle adjustments to climb a few feet at a time before slowly descending back to your original altitude.
As you gain confidence with altitude changes, begin introducing slow yaw movements. Rotate the aircraft 90 degrees, pause, and then rotate another 90 degrees until you’ve completed a full rotation. All the while, you should strive to maintain a constant altitude.
Practicing this drill will teach you to separate yaw from throttle while flying. If you run into trouble, try choosing a stationary object (like a traffic cone or a tree) to use as your reference point as you practice gradual yaw movements, stopping every 90 degrees to ensure you’re maintaining your altitude.
Drill 2: Right Stick Only (Pitch and Roll)
Once you become more comfortable working with the left stick, it’s time to move on to the right side of the stick.
One of the biggest challenges new drone pilots often face here is related to orientation. When the drone turns to face you, the left and right inputs on the controller are effectively reversed. This is all about perspective, and it’s something you can overcome with practice (but we’ll get into that more in Drill 4).
As you practice with your right stick only, start by gently pushing the stick forward to fly just a few feet ahead before smoothly pulling it back to your starting position. Repeat this movement several times before incorporating roll practice — where you should focus on using small and controlled inputs to roll smoothly from side to side.
Working on this drill, aim for smooth, incremental inputs as opposed to abrupt corrections. If you’re recording video, this will result in much steadier footage.
Drill 3: The Square Pattern
Once you’re comfortable practicing pitch/roll and throttle/yaw independently, it’s time to combine those skills with the square pattern drill.
To complete this drill, position the drone about 10 to 15 feet in front of you at eye level, keeping the nose pointing away from you. Then:
- Pick 4 visual reference points (corners)
- Fly a perfect square:
- Forward > Right > Back > Left
- Stop briefly at each corner
- Once back at the start, repeat the drill in the opposite direction
Aim to keep each side of your square the same “length” while maintaining a consistent altitude. Don’t rush to complete the drill too quickly; instead, aim for accuracy. Gradually, your confidence and precision will grow, and you’ll be able to execute the drill both quickly and smoothly.
Drill 4: Yaw Orientation Training
Most beginner drone pilots struggle with orientation at some point because, when the aircraft’s nose is pointed toward you, your controls seemingly reverse. The best way to overcome this challenge is through extensive drone yaw orientation training and repeated practice.
To master these essential drone flying skills, start with the same square pattern from Drill 3. However, when you arrive at each corner, you’ll want to add a yaw maneuver (turning the nose toward the next corner at each waypoint before moving forward).
Over time, this will help you think in terms of the drone’s frame of reference and recognize how the aircraft responds regardless of orientation.
Drill 5: Manual Return to Home
Although modern drones are equipped with an automatic “return to home” (RTH) feature, experienced pilots know that this should be treated as a safety net rather than a feature to rely on for everyday flying. After all, RTH can fail or be inappropriate for use in some situations, and FAA’s Part 107 regulations require pilots to be responsible for the safe operation of an aircraft at all times.
With this in mind, practicing return to home vs. manual control drone is a must. The best drill to help master this skill involves flying about 200–300 feet away while maintaining a visual line of sight (VLOS). How Often Should You Practice These Drills?
Your drone flying skills will improve most through consistent practice and repetition, so try setting aside at least 15–20 minutes a few times per week for the best results. With regular practice, you’ll eventually build muscle memory, which will make pulling off these maneuvers feel like second nature.
Remember, too, that these skills all build upon one another. Much as scales are the foundational building blocks of music, these individual drone movements are the foundation of confident and safe flight. Therefore, it’s always wise to begin your practice with Drill 1 and only move to the next drill in sequence after you feel you’ve genuinely mastered the previous one.
