Oil: It’s More Than Just the Level
In this MzeroA classic, Jason Schappert and Director of Maintenance Russell Loving take a closer look at oil checks that go beyond the standard “six quarts” checklist entry. Sure, the dipstick may read the correct quantity – but what about the quality?
Russ explains that a darker, black oil may indicate the presence of carbon buildup. While flight schools typically change oil every 100 hours or at annual inspection, it’s important for pilots to recognize when oil might be due for replacement sooner. Additionally, new overlook the oil cap. It should be finger-tight only. Over-tightening can damage the sealing and valve and lead to oil loss – a small detail with serious consequences, including engine failure.
The Nose Wheel Strut: Two Fingers Could Save Your Flight
The checklist may not call this out specifically, but Russ emphasizes the importance of inspecting the nose wheel strut beyond a quick glance. Always check for about two fingers’ width of exposed chrome on the strut. Whether landing on a bumpy grass strip or dealing with a hard touchdown, proper inflation helps absorb impact and prevent strut collapse.
It’s also important to take a few more seconds to inspect the tires. Look for flat spots, exposed cords, uneven wear, or underinflation – any of which could signal unsafe conditions or the need for maintenance. Safety begins on the ground.
Tail Section Cables & Control Surfaces: What the Checklist Doesn’t Say
A typical checklist might say “elevator – check” or “rudder – check”, but that simple walk-by isn’t enough. Go beyond inspecting for frayed control cables, turnbuckles that are missing safety wire, and cotter pins that secure nuts and bolts.
These seemingly minor components play a critical role in flight control. A missing pin or compromised cable could result in catastrophic loss of control. Jason and Russ show how a few extra moments of inspection in the tail section can make a world of difference.
