Asking “where can I fly my drone legally?” is an important step when you’re starting to fly a drone. An open field or clear sky doesn’t automatically mean the flight is legal. Fortunately, the answer is simple, and there is a repeatable process that works for both recreational and Part 107 pilots. Checking the airspace is only the beginning, as pilots also need to review current restrictions and make sure the location itself permits drone operations. Here’s more on what you need to know.
First, Understand the Airspace
Every drone flight takes place within the National Airspace System, so understanding the FAA drone airspace rules is your first step.
The FAA explains that recreational pilots operating in Class G airspace, also called uncontrolled airspace, can usually fly at or below 400 feet AGL without requesting an airspace authorization.
The process changes in controlled airspace, though, which includes Classes B, C, D, and surface Class E spaces associated with airports. Pilots need FAA authorization before flying a drone in these areas.
That’s why looking around for an airport isn’t enough to determine if the airspace is clear. Controlled airspace can actually extend down to the surface, while UAS Facility Maps divide areas around airports into grids with different altitude ceilings. Some grids may permit operations at certain altitudes with authorization, while others don’t allow any at all.
Know the No-Fly Zones
Airspace class is only one part of determining drone legal flying locations. Pilots also need to look for drone no-fly zones and temporary restrictions.
Federal restrictions, for example, often apply around national security-sensitive facilities. The National Park Service also tends to prohibit using drones, including launching or landing them from lands and waters under its control.
Stadium restrictions are another example of when drones may not be accepted. Drone operations are restricted around certain professional and college football games, Major League Baseball games, and major NASCAR events, among other sporting events, beginning one hour before the event and continuing until one hour afterward.
Then, there are temporary flight restrictions, or TFRs. These events, which can include things like wildfires and VIP movements (as well as other kinds of special events or natural disasters), can result in restrictions with relatively little notice, which means a location that worked for a flight yesterday could have different conditions today.
Washington, D.C. also has particularly strict restrictions within its Special Flight Rules Area. The FAA’s Where Can I Fly? resources provide additional information about restrictions pilots should check before launch.
LAANC: Your Key to Controlled Airspace
Being in a controlled airspace doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to fly. A LAANC authorization drone request may allow a pilot to operate there legally.
LAANC, or Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability, allows recreational and Part 107 pilots to request access to controlled airspace at participating airports. Eligible requests that stay within published limits may receive approval in near-real time.
Pilots use UAS Facility Maps to identify the altitude associated with the grid where they want to fly. From there, they request a location and altitude at or below that ceiling through an FAA-approved LAANC service provider.
Requests may also be planned ahead of time. When an airport doesn’t participate in LAANC, Part 107 pilots may use FAADroneZone for the FAA’s manual authorization process.
Check B4UFLY Before You Fly
The B4UFLY app system gives drone pilots a quick way to determine if a particular location is suitable for flying.
There’s been an important change to B4UFLY that you need to know about, though. As of February 1, 2024, it’s no longer one standalone FAA application. Instead, the FAA B4UFLY program works through approved third-party service providers.
Current providers include:
- Airspace Link
- AutoPylot
- Avision
- UASidekick
- Aloft’s Air Aware
- FlightLoop
These services draw from FAA data and provide pilots with information on restrictions such as controlled airspace and maximum altitudes. A drone flight restrictions map is a strong starting point, but pilots still need to complete the rest of the preflight process to fly safely and within regulations.
Your Pre-Flight Process for Any Location
Checking a location doesn’t take long and should be a standard procedure. Before launching:
- Drop a pin at the proposed location in an FAA-approved B4UFLY service.
- Determine whether the flight is in controlled or Class G airspace.
- Get LAANC authorization when it’s required.
- Check TFRs again on the day of the flight.
- Confirm state, county, city, or property rules affecting the location.
- Verify drone registration and Remote ID requirements before takeoff.
The Mistakes That Get Pilots in Trouble
Many drone violations start with assumptions, like that because the air is clear, it’s safe to fly a drone there.
Another one is assuming there’s no controlled airspace because an airport isn’t visible nearby. Surface Class E is one reason that approach doesn’t work.
Yet another mistake is checking the location days ahead and skipping the day-of-flight review. TFRs can change quickly, so current information matters and can affect where you’re allowed to fly.
FAA airspace approval also doesn’t necessarily provide permission to use the property below it. Local governments and property managers may establish rules related to parks or takeoff and landing locations. LAANC clears the airspace requirement, not every possible ground restriction.
Recreational status doesn’t remove the federal requirements, either. The FAA’s recreational flyer rules include the TRUST test and visual line of sight, while registration applies to many drones weighing more than 0.55 pounds. Remote ID requirements also apply to registered drones unless an exception applies.
Learn the Rules Once and Stop Guessing
Flying a drone can be fun, or it might be a part of a work task that needs to be completed. Whatever the reason might be, asking “where can I fly my drone legally” is an excellent question. Whether the aircraft is being used recreationally or for paid work, the process largely stays the same for you. You need to understand the airspace. Then, check current restrictions and verify the location before launching. Doing this will help you stay on the right side of the law and prevent issues (like violating FAA regulations).
