What is FAA Part 107 Certificate Currency?
If you already hold your FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, congratulations, you’re part of a growing community of licensed drone pilots. However, certification doesn’t last forever. Every 24 months you must complete a renewal course to stay current and legal to fly commercially. Without renewal, you risk losing your ability to:
- Accept paid drone jobs
- Operate under Part 107 rules
- Maintain insurance coverage for operations
The FAA’s Updated Renewal Process
The good news? Renewal is now easier than ever. Since April 2021, the FAA has made the recurrent training process free and available online. You don’t need to retake the original knowledge test. Instead, you complete a quick course and quiz through the FAA Safety Team’s website.
Step-by-Step: How to Renew Your Part 107 Certificate
Follow these simple steps to stay current:
- Go to FAASafety.gov
- Create a free account or log in.
- Search for ALC-677: Part 107 Small UAS Recurrent
- Complete the lessons (with built-in knowledge checks)
- Pass the final quiz
- Download and save your completion certificate
- Keep a digital or printed copy with your pilot documents
Remember: If your certificate lapses, you don’t lose it, you just can’t fly commercially until renewal is complete.
